Who's Beautiful?

5 × 30' (GER, ENG subs)

We want to find out who is considered beautiful where in the world and why. Journalist Julia is on a mission to see what people are willing to do for their ideal of beauty.

In Ethiopia she lets herself be “barbecued” and meets the most elegant gentlemen in the Republic of Congo, but she also learns that knitting Iceland-sweaters might just be as good for your beauty as distributing rice to monks in Asian monasteries. Julia explores different ideals in an amusing and entertaining way.

Episodes

  1. Africa - Ethiopia, Uganda, Republic of Congo

The season begins in Africa: Ethiopians are generally regarded as the most beautiful people in the world. It is not for nothing that Ethiopians have achieved world fame as models. Julia struggles in model training and learns for herself why Ethiopians sit for hours on smoky ovens smeared with butter for beauty. In rural Uganda, she watches a bride gain weight before the wedding. And in Brazzaville, Congo, the Sapeur, members of the "Association of Elegant People", teach the reporter how to dress perfectly.

  2. Middle East - Lebanon

In the second episode of her search for beauty, Julia is drawn to Lebanon. In the Arab heartland of artificial beautification, the reporter assists in liposuction and learns a lot in the operating room about why all Arab women want to look like Lebanese women. A pop icon explains why perfect looks are more important in Beirut than in the rest of the world. And in the more conservative Tripoli, Julia makes a lot of useful veil experiences. At the very end she gives in and gets dressed up in one of the countless beauty factories à la Libanaise: With astonishing results!

  3. Asia - Myanmar

Anyone who claims to be the most beautiful people in Southeast Asia, like Myanmar, must expect a visit from Julia Held. She goes shopping with the acting Miss Myanmar Longyi and learns immediately why all women here smear a paste of tree bark in their faces. From the tattoo studio, the reporter is immediately driven to the monastery, where she works on her karma and learns the true secret of beauty from an abbot.

  4. Iceland - Reykjavik and the West Fjords

In the fourth episode of her beauty search Julia is drawn to the north. All the way to the north, to Iceland. Who is considered beautiful by the descendants of the Vikings? Emil Thor Gudmundsson. He is a model of an Icelandic outdoor brand. Nature, Julia, a convinced beard wearer, reveals, is beautiful, so they all want to be as natural as possible here. And that's why the men obviously wear the rugged Icelandic landscape on their bodies - with the Lopapeysas, the Iceland pullovers. Iceland is quite different from the rest of Europe, which means for Julia that she can learn here. She knits uninterruptedly, collects herbs, drinks litres of cod liver oil and lolls in green algae: everything for beauty.

  5. North America - Miami, Florida

In the last episode of the beauty search Julia Held is drawn to the USA. In sunny Florida she first checks out the latest trends in body cult: vampire lifting, new agonizing fitness exercises, as well as the latest craze for supposedly healthy and thus naturally beautifying nutrition. While playing golf with cheerful seniors, the German learns why not only Florida's friendly climate but also money makes people younger and more beautiful. And looks at North America's future: she speaks Spanish and has completely different views about what is beautiful and what is not than the all American Cheerleading Girl.
