" I am an anarchist by conviction... I came to Geneva to kill a sovereign... it was a crown that I had in view."
It was a tragic coincidence what happened in Geneva in 1898. On September 10th dreadful news reached the courts of Vienna: the 60 years old Austrian Empress Elizabeth was slayed in Geneva.
The film highlights the circumstances surrounding her death including the indiscretion which revealed her location to the anarchist Lucheni and the preparations he made to commit the unlawful act. For the first time ever, we delve into not only the life of the Empress but also the anarchist, to give an even portrayal of both victim and perpetrator.
Anarchism demands a life without state, based on the ideals of freedom and equality. The followers of this radical doctrine sought to reach their goals with the murder of monarchs and statesmen.
At first Lucheni wanted to murder the Italian king Umberto I. But he couldn't afford the money for the journey and thus, focued on the Duke of Orléans, who was supposed to visit Geneva in September. When the visit was cancelled at short notice, Lucheni just made do with Sisi - and so it came to one of the best documented criminal cases of the Fin de Siècle.
Lucheni had learned of the visit from the newspaper, although Sisi had arrived under a false name. His victim was basically indifferent to the Italian, who was driven by assassination fantasies: "I would like to kill someone, but it must be a very well-known personality," he had explained to his roommate in May 1898.
