Five thousand years ago, a large number of donkeys were domesticated. So, the last wild specimens are very rare and extremely endangered.

To ensure their safety, the Basel Zoo is in cooperation with the European breeding program of the Somali wild game. The donkey was once an indispensable working bull, especially around the Mediterranean. Now this practice has gone obsolete. What do they do with the former “work-horses”? In Cyprus, hundreds of old donkeys, which are no longer used in agriculture, live in the "Donkey Sanctuary", where they are lovingly cared after. But without new jobs for the animals, there is a risk that the species will die out. Preservation through use is the motto. Donkeys can accompany people on trekkings, pull coaches or be used as riding animals for children. In the Saxerriet penitentiary donkeys are used as a therapeutic tool to train the prisoners. An organic farm in Italy with eight hundred donkeys of different races produces milk, cosmetics from donkey milk and meat.
