THE WORLD IN 30 MINUTES

Ana Rosa and her Right for Child Labor

30' (GER, ENG subs)
Eleven year old Ana Rosa works as a merchant at the market of Potosí, in the middle of Bolivia. Her family would not be able to survive without her wage.

She loves her work and the president, because he legalized a new law: children from 10 years are allowed to work. We get to know the kids, who work at the market, on the streets and even children who work in mines, where their live is endangered – without contracts or insurance. Although the president ensured, the new child labor law is going to change that. Ana Rosa believes that only children can help themselves.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) has convicted Bolivia because the new law transgresses the conventions against child labour. Eva Morales and Ana assert that the ILO hates them and that the claims that working kids like them would not go to school is but a lie. Actually at Ana Rosa's school we find out that she is a brilliant pupil. But Ana is the exception and the 8,000 working kids in the city make up the general rule – children who are force to accept too much responsibility at a young age are subject to stress and will do badly in school.

There is still a lot to be done for little Ana Rosa, who besides work and school now also got elected for the governance of the child-labour-union. Ana Rosa believes that only children can help themselves.
