Empty store fronts, darkened windows, uniformed persons patrolling the street – quite unusual for a vacation spot.
THE WORLD IN 30 MINUTES
Clearwater, Florida - The City of Scientology
The American city, Clearwater, is being controlled by scientological groups and residents of varying beliefs are forced to seek dwellings further and further away from the city’s centre. It is next to impossible to make a move in the city without being watched by security cameras controlled by the Scientologists. That which was once a vacation spot, has become a place of duress.
Approximately one million Germans vacation every year on the beaches of Clearwater in Florida. But none have ever found it necessary to cross the bridge that connects the beaches to the city. Downtown is like a ghost town. Why is that?
"Scientologists view the outside world as a threat to their lifestyle. They pride themselves on being intelligent and wise and present themselves as having superpowers that affords them certain privileges. They would never merge with a democratic republic", are the words of radio journalist and Clearwater resident, Tom Smith. He has also confessed to being both fearful and upset about the happenings in his city.
It is next to impossible to make a move in the city without being watched by security cameras controlled by the Scientologists; it's as if the non-scientologists are being forced to live life under duress.
