But for many, the mere utterance of the term "electronic sport" leaves a bad taste in their mouths. Despite this, several hundred million people around the world still compete in leagues and take part in competitions – not just for points but also for highly coveted prize money. Experts forecast the imminent rise of eSports into a global mega-trend.
The players themselves are called pro-gamers, the teams are called clans. They train for several hours a day and stage world championships.
What the professional gamers do to make it to the top has nothing in common with simply playing computer games on our office PCs. In Korea, the best gamers have long been superstars and earn millions. Germany has not yet quite reached this level. Counterstrike, League of Legends or StarCraft are the names of the titles that essentially continue what began back in the 80s with a German TV show called “Telespiele” (Telegames).
