Do Animals Think?

45' (GER, ENG subs), 52' (GER, FRE)

For a long time, animals were regarded as automatons which are guided by their instincts and merely react to simple stimuli. Primate research was the first to question this view.

The film accompanies distinguished scientists who depart from previously accepted doctrines and also presents tests and field experiments which are used to examine the astonishing abilities of animals. The documentary includes a large number of examples which show that the differences between human beings and animals in the cognitive sector are constantly decreasing.

In view of the current research results, the Swiss philosopher Dominik Perler even speaks of animal intellect. The neurobiologist and philosopher Gerhard Roth comes to a radical conclusion: "Our concept of humanity changes dramatically in view of these findings. First of all, what many have feared is correct – we are not the crown of creation, in no way. Even if we can say we are the most intelligent – whether we’re the cleverest is another question."
