Mosquitoes – Annoying Invaders
For most people they are just annoying - mosquitoes. Due to various exotic species that are plaguing Europe, these bloodsuckers are prone to spread even deadly tropical diseases.
Biologist Norbert Becker and his team are trying to battle midges in the Oberrhein area with special poison created to kill mosquito larvae. However, with climate change expediting the invasion of exotic midges like the “Asian Tiger Mosquito” and their pathogens, their task is proving to be quite difficult.
Mosquitoes have infected millions and will continue to infect millions of people every year with various diseases that were once restricted to areas in the tropics. These infections often lead to death. Research to prevent such occurrence is unfortunately still in its infancy and as such there is nothing to combat these harbingers of death.
Through intensive mosquito monitoring and the use of insecticides and other poisons, different countries around the world hope to rid themselves of their mosquito problems. How successful will they be?
