The Eye

45' (ENG, GER)
A 3D-documentary about the most powerful optical telescope in the world

In June 2009, a film crew of German 3D film experts travelled to Chile’s Atacama Desert, one of the most arid places on earth. Here is home to the VLT (Very Large Telescope) of the European Southern Observatory (ESO). Along with stunning views of the telescopes and clear explanations of how such a technology masterpiece functions, the movie also showcases the life of astronomers, engineers, physicists and technicians at a scientific outpost in the desert.

The telescope is the “sharpest eye of humankind”, which outperforms even the Hubble Space Telescope in some wavelengths. One of the most fascinating scientific instruments ever built, it has found its home in one of the most exciting places in the world.
The meticulously crafted 3D visuals of THE EYE convey an intense feeling of “being there” to the spectators, taking them on virtual tours inside the huge telescope domes or out walking in the desert. Along with stunning views of the telescopes and clear explanations of how such a technology masterpiece functions, the movie also showcases the life of astronomers, engineers, physicists and technicians at a scientific outpost in the desert - 120 kilometres away from any human settlement, but closer to the stars than any other place on earth.
