Harbour of the Future

52' (GER, FRE, ENG subs)

Plans for future harbours must begin now: new developments must be anticipated and trends must be recognized. With the growing sizes of container ships, harbours have to handle increased amounts of cargo in shorter time frames.

Consequently, the digitalized era has infiltrated the harbours. We will show you how with autonomous vehicles, cargo can be delivered to storage independent of drivers and containers can be unloaded from the comfort of the office. But wouldn’t an automated harbour make workers obsolete?

Planning the Harbour of the Future is not an easy task – not only does it mean starting with the planning today by analyzing processes and observing current tendencies but also to anticipate developments and detect upcoming trends. Here it seems as though the sizes of the container ships have no measurable boundaries. But how will the harbours cope with this challenge? Which strategy will be used if surface increase is not an option? – Digitalisation.
Here we will visit the biggest terminals of the world, namely those in Hamburg, Rotterdam and Dubai, to find out how the Harbour of the Future works.
