Today's Superwomen

45' (GER)
This documentary accompanies two women and their families for six months - through the highs and the lows, between the happiness of having the parents close by and the guilty conscience that stems from never being able to satisfy everyone.

As the number of people throughout Europe in need of long-term nursing care continues to rise, can society still count on the help of the daughters? Flexibility and permanent availability, as is expected of career workers today, is difficult enough to reconcile with raising children, let alone with caring for the elderly, who tend to require a lot of time and patience.

Christine's father moved in with her after he suffered a severe stroke. She is now one of around 10 million Germans who provide long-term nursing care for a family member. It is estimated that this figure will grow to 27 million over the next few years. The businesswoman, Verena, brought her mother to live with her nine years ago. She was becoming increasingly reliant on nursing care and developed dementia. Verena's husband abandoned the family, and since then she's been taking care of her mother and the children by herself.
