Wanderlust - On the Trails of the Rheinsteig

45' (GER)

Rich history and breathtaking views lie around every corner of these extraordinary trails.

Hiking is a hugely popular way to seek adventure. Massive hiking trails that stretch through the most beautiful land in Germany attract people from all over the world. One of which is the steep path on the Rhine, which runs for 320 kilometers from Bonn to Wiesbaden. The trek along it crosses through one of the most beautiful river landscapes in Europe. From its highpoints, there are astonishing views of the narrow Rhine Valley. Along the way are the Siebengebirge mountains that hold ruins of Dragon Rock castle, where the ancient Roman Limes fortifications remain deep in the dense forests. In the Middle Rhine Valley, extraordinary castles stretch into the sky, which have been declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites. We hike along the Rhine River and embark on this historic journey through one of the most beautiful landscapes in Germany.

In addition to the Dragon Rock, we visit the Heisterbach monastery ruins. For this part of our journey, we explore both above ground and underground. We are able to bring the Middle Ages back to life by venturing into ancient sewage canals. Between Neuwied and Lahnstein, the hiking trail leads past numerous tourist highlights, such as the Neuwied Zoo and the butterfly garden near Bendorf, which are worth visiting no matter the weather. From here, forestry director Thomas Hahlbrock leads the expedition to the Roman Limes. We then head to the Rupertsklamm gorge, which leaves a memorable impression for hikers. It ends just a few kilometers before Marksburg Castle, which has been completely preserved over the years and is even a household name in Japan. Past Loreley and Rüdesheim, the hiking trail stretches through the Rheingau to Wiesbaden. Towards the end of the trail, the hike takes us through luscious wine-growing areas up to the Eberbach Monastery. This picturesque monastery became world famous due to the film “The Name of the Rose.” In addition to the astonishing imagery of castles, monasteries, and landscapes, the film shows that there is no lack of adventure on the Rhine. Whether it is the crashing of the waves against the Rhine’s kayakers, the horsemen exploring the Rhine trail on horseback, or the Climbers conquering steep mountains, adventure can be found around every corner.
