Europe's Forgotten Dictatorships

2 × 45' (ENG, GER)
The history of mankind is filled with power-hungry dictators. Come with us on a journey to the past as we re-visit Europe's forgotton dictatorships.

While some dictators are known worldwide for their actions, there are many that have kept under the radar. However, this does not mean that they have done less harm than their more famous comrades. We take a journey to the past, to the forgotten dictatorships of Greece and Portugal. The crucial events that led to the chaotic rise and fall of Greek’s Regime of Colonels dictatorship are reconstructed, along with the dictatorship of Antonio de Oliveira Salazar in Portugal. The two dictatorships differ greatly, as Antonio Salazar’s ended peacefully. Why was this the case?

1. Ailing State - Greece's Forgotten Dictatorship
In April 1967, fifteen colonels staged a coup and installed a dictatorship in Greece. This dictatorship was the last stage of a deep social division that had already begun in the Greek civil war.

2. The New State - Portugal's Forgotten Dictatorship
The dictatorship in Portugal was the longest right-wing dictatorship in Europe in the 20th century.  For 48 years, one personality had it all: António Oliveira Salazar.
