The events of New Year’s Eve in Cologne left scars on the society: gatherings of young men from Tunisia, Libya, Algeria and Morocco are seen differently and more critically. This is a common situation in the Maghreb quarter in Düsseldorf, where the North Africans make up a large portion of the residents. Behind closed curtains, people talk about offenders coming from this area. And the residents are starting to feel watched: we are all under general suspicion.
Since the incidents at German train stations, where women have been sexually assaulted, mostly by people of North African descent, camera teams are wandering through the streets of the Maghreb quarter hoping to get their next story.
All of a sudden police cars have arrived on the scene, chalked full with policemen who to orchestrate a police raid through the quarter. Mohammed Alabouni, the owner of a supermarket is happy, because he suspects that many of young men who have recently moved to the area are troublemakers. They are illegal immigrants who have caused him to lose customers, "Finally they are doing something" says Mr. Alabouni.
Meanwhile the officers are locking up the Cafés of the area – one by one they are taken out into a built up tent and searched. Forty of them were arrested that evening.
