We are at the beach in Lesbos, in the middle of the night. An inflatable boat, constructed to accommodate 30 but is overloaded with 60 refugees, docks onto the beach.

Moments like these are the ones you will never forget: women, men and children stumbling onto the beach, falling to the ground in exhaustion. A boy, who is actually too “big” to cry, cries unrestrained. We accompany Bita and Khalil Kermani and witness how the refugee situation in Lesbos gets more intense. Their journey to freedom is far from over.
The people who escaped from war and terror have survived the dangerous crossing from Turkey to the Greek island. And this time there are helpers on site, for example the German-Iran couple who are both doctors, Bita and Khalil Kermani welcome the refugees and help them get to the mainland. In the middle of the chaos, surrounded by waves and screaming people: A woman with her four week old baby. “It was unbelievable to see her, how she gave over that little and fragile child off the boat after arrival”, states Bita.
Her husband's brother was visiting Lesbos and witnessed the chaotic conditions of the refugees. He then called Khalil and Bita: “You have to come. You are needed here, mainly as doctors.” The couple didn't have to think too long; they interrupted their vacation on Crete to go lend a helping hand in Lesbos. For days they took care of the exhausted refugees with medicine, food, drinks or sometimes with simple human comfort.
