How Terror Affects Tourism

45' (GER, ENG subs)

Empty beaches and hotels in Turkey – no vacant beds in Mallorca. The ebb and flow of tourism along the Mediterranean Sea.

Tourism around the Mediterranean Sea has changed a lot. Nowadays, vacationers are avoiding Turkey, Paris and the South of France, cruise liners have changed their routes and fewer ships are docking at the former tourist hotspots. But, while these countries are experiencing a ‘drought’, places like Mallorca, Portugal and Greece are experiencing a significant spike in tourism. The city of Palma de Mallorca is so overrun with tourists that the locals are now beginning to object to their presence. Vacationers have jumped ship! We will show you the countries that have lost tourists due to a series of terrorist attacks, how the surmounting fear of terror has affected these countries and last but not least, who profits from it all.

In Paris the threat of terrorism is easy to sense. The central station is being patrolled by heavily armed policemen. Most of them stand at strategic points of interest brandishing machine-guns. Sure they are keeping the terrorists away but the well-placed authority figures intimidate the tourists and the guns spark fear among them. Is this the same for the other countries?
