No Exit - Building Walls in Africa

45', 30' (GER, ENG subs)

European governments have come up with a new form of solution to the growing migratory flow: with the help of investments worth billions they have built a barrier that already stops refugees in Africa.

We travel through Mali and Niger on a search for clues along the new border wall that Europe has built across Africa. The journey begins in Mali, which is one of the most important transit countries for people from West Africa. The goal of the European governments: Refugees should be stopped on their way to Europe. In Mali and Niger, where with the help of investments worth billions, the security apparatus here is to be expanded to make the border impenetrable, we meet migrants, farmers and refugee helpers.

One finding: this European policy helps above all the corrupt elites of African states - but not the people, for whom flight still seems to be the only alternative. Together with her team, Shafagh Laghai will show what this means for the people who live in the countries or are still fleeing. On their way along the African escape routes, they meet former escape helpers who do not know what to live on today and people looking for dangerous alternatives across the desert. Alternative routes that cost many lives. They meet young men who have been deported from Germany and have now been banished from their families because they are regarded as failure.
