Cold Hearted Coal

45' (GER, ENG subs)

Charcoal is a very controversial topic – especially in light of climate changes. While those in Europe debate energy efficient vacuum cleaners, 2.7 billion people worldwide are heating and cooking with wood or rather, charcoal.

55% of tropical woods are used for fuel resulting in the production of vast amounts of hazardous gases! Yet, tropical forests are still being cleared. The impact of these gases on the climate is so great that it cannot be offset by insulated houses or electric cars. Nevertheless, more and more tropical forests are being illegally chopped down. Illegal logging is a rather lucrative business.  We enter the shady end of Africa and Eastern Europe to look at the various uses of wood in different regions of the world, deforestation, their impact on the climate and the fight to protect our rainforests.
