Death in Hands

They are former soldiers or helpful volunteers. Together they hunt for the improvised explosive devices (IED) that were left behind by the IS terrorists. After the civil war a field of debris with countless booby traps remained, which still claims victims today and make a new beginning impossible - the late revenge of the IS on the lost terrain. Without metal detectors, protective gears nor fear for their lives, these family men disarm the boobytraps hidden among the ruins of Libya to save what’s left of their homeland.
Death in Hands shows the almost hopeless attempt to clean Benghazi of these explosive devices. A haunting film that lets the viewer feel the enormous tension of the mine clearers and sometimes also the cameraman during this life-threatening work.
At the same time, the film opens up a completely new view of Libya for Western viewers. It shows that this battered country is not only ruled by heavily armed human trafficking gangs, rival tribes and terrorists. Death in Hands makes it clear that there are people in Libya who want to normalize their country, end violence and pave the way for a peaceful future.
In the beginning they were eighteen: family fathers searching for deadly booby traps in the ruins of Benghazi. In residential buildings, hotels, the university and playgrounds, IS fanatics hid the perfidious traps when they were expelled from Benghazi. At the end of shooting this documentary, only one of them is unharmed.
