The dawn of the digital age has transformed computers into battle fields. The soldiers are hackers and information has become the most lethal weapon.
Electoral campaigns have changed in the digital age: due to the internet, they are more vulnerable to manipulation and supposedly fake news. It was proclaimed that in the last elections, the voting machines in America were hacked. In France, the President’s account was said to also have been hacked. The purpose: to find and publish information that discredits the respective candidates. The film shows how social media can be used to sway voters and examines the extent to which parliament and parliamentarians are protected from hackers.
US voting machines were compromised by Russian hackers. The American authorities are sure of this fact. Plus, among the hacked accounts were those of persons within Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s trusted circle of representatives. Just a few weeks before the elections in France, Presidential favourite Emmanuel Macron’s email account was hacked. Hackers have interfered with the presidential elections in the US and France. How vulnerable is Berlin?
Cyberattacks on politics have become a very real threat. Not only hackers, but also those who work with false news. By intensely manipulating opinions on the web and streaming fake news, many are attempting to influence the elections. Their goal is to cause maximum uncertainty among the voters. Six weeks before the federal elections we ask: how smoothly will the election in September proceed? How do trolls, hackers, and fake news influence elections?
