Kazakhstan - Boom and Crisis
Kazakhstan is in the midst of an economic crisis. Social tension is on the rise and the future is uncertain.
After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Kazakhstan was faced with a rather daunting future. The oil boom years were behind them and crisis has taken hold of the country’s economy. The plunging price of oil has resulted in deficits in the national budget. Salaries are stagnant, the currency has collapsed and economic recovery is not in sight. The film devotes itself to the everyday lives of regular Kazakhs, the people who have to navigate between modernity and tradition and offers a complex portrait of the country that is trying to find a place in the globalized post-Soviet era.
President Nazarbayev has positioned Kazakhstan as a Central Asian regional power with good ties to the United States, Russia, China and the EU. He was to guarantee the country’s stability. However, his domestic policies are repressive. Plus, major projects, including the Expo 2017, were not able to fulfill the leader's promises of a brighter future. Caught between boom and crisis, Kazakhstan tries to determine its future.
