Rape! Women's Fear in India

45' (GER, ENG subs)
"The rape was just the beginning. What came afterwards was just as bad," says Suzette Jordan. After visiting a disco, five men raped her, beat her bloody and threw her out of a moving car like a piece of garbage.

The gang rape and death of a student in New Delhi in 2012 triggered mass protests. In the world's largest democracy, girls are auctioned off to the highest bidder and then raped for months by the male relatives and friends of the buyer. The police are aware of what is happening but take no action. We accompany Suzette, who survived a gang rape and made the decision to speak out about an issue that is for the most part hushed up in India: the humiliation by policemen, doctors and judges in the aftermath of a rape.

"Little has changed for the victims", Suzette Jordan remains convinced, and she discovered it the hard way: berated by politicians as a prostitute, interrogated by police like a criminal, treated by medical personnel like a piece of meat, led before judges and humiliated. But Suzette is educated, belongs to the middle class and as such has a better chance in the fight for justice than women from more disadvantaged backgrounds. Like 17-year-old Sajina: she was auctioned off to the highest bidder, and then raped by the male relatives and friends of the buyer for months. The police were aware of what was happening, but took no action. They're of the opinion that "99 percent of rape cases are made up".
