Rwanda – The Long Road to Reconciliation

The 1994 Rwandan Genocide is engraved in our collective memory. How does the young generation today deal with the brutal past of their country?

The Rwandan Genocide caused the death of almost one million people in just 100 days. In 1994, radical Hutus incited their own ethnic group to eradicate the Tutsi minority. Today, 25 years later, Rwanda still has a long way to go towards inner reconciliation, but they have made a lot of progress in the country. Rwanda is becoming Africa’s model state, despite massive restrictions on freedom of speech. Meanwhile, in East Congo, the leaders of the old Hutu militias are preparing young Rwandan fighters for rebellion. We tell the stories of our encounters with young men who were able to flee from East Congo, as well as the stories of the “Generation 25”, young people born during or shortly after the 1994 genocide. Witness how a generation of Rwandans deals with the burden of their own history. A generation that refuses to be held back by the past and plans on fulfilling the dream of a reconciled society.
