Death of Venice
In the night between the 12th and 13th November 2019, Venice was hit by the highest tide in more than 50 years.
80% of Venice was immersed under water. Hundreds of businesses were destroyed and the ancient crypt of St. Mark’s Cathedral was flooded. The worst flood since 1966 which set in motion a worldwide effort to save the city from the dual threats of subsidence and rising sea levels. But the plan failed. Despite investments into the MOSE surge barrier in excess of 6 million euro, the high lunar tide, the heavy rain and the easterly winds drove the sea right into Venice’s streets. We follow the events that followed from the day after this catastrophic event. We investigate into what led to the disaster that potentially could have destroyed Venice forever. We reconstruct the tragedy with hundreds of photographs, real footage and witness interviews that were shot during the emergency, and we look back to 50 years ago when it all started.
