FIFA and the Price of Football

45'
Corrupt, reform reluctant, almighty and irresponsible – this is the image we get of the FIFA that presents itself as the world’s biggest family.

Corrupt, reform reluctant, almighty and irresponsible – this is the image we get about the FIFA that presents itself as the world’s biggest family. The latest news on the arrest of seven FIFA officials and Blatter's resignation just four days after the election validate the impression. In his speeches Blatter likes to talk about the pacifying effect of football and how his work makes the world a better place. But this is not the case for workers in Qatar and Russia. This report draws a morbid picture on the mighty organization.

On May 29th Sepp Blatter – after 17 years in office - ran again for president of the FIFA - for the fifth time! Though he ran, his triumph was long secured. He is idolized by his colleagues and often celebrated as a visionary. In his speeches he likes to talk about the pacifying effect of football and how his work makes the world a better place. But this is not the case for workers in Qatar and Russia.

This report draws a morbid picture of the mighty organization: corruption and bribing scandals are being hushed up, embezzlement is being disguised as big family business and existing labour legislations are being suspended. Workers are practically being enslaved in inhuman conditions! And what makes the matter even worse is that the world continuously turns a blind eye.
